For 78 Fertility, Wisdom, the cherub, Neptune and the Tritons have served as testimonials to tender matrimonial love and commitment. The Greco-Roman-styled nudes have been the scenic backdrop in countless Brooklyn wedding photographs. These days, however, the bronze figures are receiving tender restorative care at Roussel Studios in Williamsburg, and just in time for this year's wedding season.
The Prospect Park Alliance is quite pleased to officially announce the ongoing $1.5 million reconstruction of the Bailey Fountain and surrounding landscape at Prospect Park's Grand Army Plaza at Flatbush Avenue and Eastern Parkway. The Fountain, originally named the Mary Louise Bailey Fountain, after the wife of its original benefactor, Brooklyn financier Frank Bailey, sits at gateway to Prospect Park's largest entrance. It was built between 1928 and 1932 at the cost of $100,000.
Designed and managed by the Alliance's Office of Design and Construction in partnership with the City of New York/Parks & Recreation, heavy work on the site was started last November with the intent to reconstruct, stabilize and secure the monuments and its foundations. It is slated for completion in August. The Office of the Mayor provided the funding.
