Vera Jackson, Teacher, California Eagle Photographer, Dies at 88
The life of one of the pioneer women photographers in the black press has ended.
Vera Ruth Jackson, an extraordinary woman of arts, education and culture, died on January 25.
During the 1940s, when our community's population was expanding in response to the demands of World War II, Vera Jackson was marking our times and recording them as staff photographer at the California Eagle newspaper. She was part of the team mobilized by the late Charlotta Bass, Eagle publisher, to serve the entertainment and informational needs in South Los Angeles.
