An historical moment: Recognition at last
Governor Dukakis declared the week of June 29th to July 5th to be Cape Verdean Recognition Week. This special week was officially inaugurated in a ceremony at the State House on July 1, 1987. The program was organized by State Representative Augusto F. Grace and members of the ape Verdean Day Committee: Barbara Gomes-Beach, Barry Lawton, Kathy Rodrigues-Taylor and Bruce Rose.
The atmosphere in the Nurses' Hall was one expectancy, curiosity, and excitement. Father Pio, associate pastor of St. Patrick's Church, offered the invocation. State Representative Grace gave the welcome and acted as Master of Ceremony. George Keverian, Speaker of the House, gave a brief historical summary of the Cape Verdean community in Massachusetts.
