It is estimated that there are close to 18,000 men and women who can be classified as "Jewish Civil Servants." These are the men and women who earn their livelihood by working for Jewish communal agencies, synagogues, and educational institutions that serve the approximately 6,000,000 Jews in the U.S. While there are those who believe that American Jewry is over-organized and over-professionalized, these men and women play a significant role. Therefore, it's important to know what their leaders are thinking and doing.
One articulate spokesman is Gerald B. Bubis, president of the Conference of Jewish Communal Services. Bubis recently sent us a paper entitled. "Some Trends Affecting The Jewish Communal Professional," which highlights the serious problems facing the Jewish community as we enter the last stages of the 20th century.
