"Lowcountry Plantations Today" is a large, lavishly illustrated work covering 35 plantations from the circa 1697 Middleburg in Berkeley County, one of South Carolina's oldest homes, to Auldbrass outside Beaufort, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The book divides the plantations into three geographic areas -- Charleston's Ashley and Cooper rivers; Georgetown's river systems and the Beaufort area -- and presents them in a roughly chronological order.
Several of these 35 properties, including Boone Hall Plantation, Drayton Hall, Brookgreen Gardens, Hampton Plantation, Magnolia Plantation and Middleton Gardens, are open to the public.
