"Generations, A Century of Women Speak about Their Lives" weaves a compelling tapestry of women's lives spanning the course of nearly a century.
Straightforwardly and matter-of-factly, without victimology, fanaticism or self-commiseration, women of three generations tell oral histories of their lives as wives, daughters, mothers, lovers, employees and professionals.
Women of all backgrounds and ages will find something to which they relate intimately. More generally, they will find a communality of plights and issues.
The oral histories are divided by generation - from 1900 to the '30s, the '30s to the '60s, and the '60s to the present day - and then into sections titled "growing up," "family" and "work."
The organization is a bit disjointed and burdensome, and some of the stories are uninteresting. But overall the anthology is intensely touching and very fulfilling.
