The College of Charleston English Department presents a reading with David Berman on Friday evening at the Simons Center for the Arts.
Widely recognized for his rock-'n'-roll project called Silver Jews (a floating partnership with Stephen Malkmus of Pavement and Drag City), Berman earned critical praise in 1999 with the release of his poetry collection, "Actual Air" (Open City).
Pulitzer Prize winner James Tate wrote "a book for everyone" on "Air's" jacket, and Billy Collins, 2001-2003 American poet laureate, dubbed Berman "the voice I have been waiting so long to hear."
The College of Charleston Visiting Writers Series played host to readings by Tate and Collins in the late '90s, and now hosts Berman in one of only a handful of appearances he makes nationwide.

Preview: James Tate and Billy Collins liked "Actual Air" and said so. Did that feel like a big deal to you, or were you pretty confident your stuff was great when you finished writing the book?
Berman: I usually need outside confirmation before I'm sure something I've done is good. I've noticed...
