D.C. Transportation Director Douglas N. Schneider, Jr., announced today that drivers will be able to turn right on red lights at District intersections beginning December 17, except at intersections where signs prohibit these turns.
The law in the District will be the same as that in Maryland and Virginia. Because the District has different street configurations and more pedestrians than suburban or rural areas, however, right turns on red lights will be permitted at only about 20 percent of the approximately 1,400 intersections in the city with traffic lights.
