"Survival of the Black Press in the 80's" was the theme of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and the subject of several speakers during the Association's recent 40th Anniversary Convention in Chicago.
Among the speakers were Thomas B. Shropshire, Vice President, Marketing and Planning, Miller Brewing Company; Gus Savage, Congressman elect, Chicago, Ill.; Allan H. Neuharth, Chairman Executive Committee, American Newspaper Publishers Association; Robert Jackson, Amalgamated Publishers Association; John H. Sengstacke, NNPA President and Publisher Chicago Defender; and Mayor Richard G. Hatcher, Gary, Indiana.
The Mayor of Chicago and the Governor of Illinois welcomed the group to the city, followed by similar greetings from Cordell Reid, representing the Abraham Lincoln Center.
Each speaker recognized the responsibility of the Black Press in confronting the problems of their communities.
During the Convention, John H. Sengstacke, Chicago Defender, was reelected president of NNPA; John L. Procope, New York Amsterdam News, was elected first vice president; and John B.
