Drawn by need to be close to the nation's capital and its legislative body, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) intends to relocate to the Washington region from New York beginning next year, the group indicated yesterday.
"The American Society for Civil Engineers has voted to relocated to the greater Washington area," said Curtis Deane, the society's managing director. "The relocation will occur in phases, based on opportunity."
Like many other not-for-profit groups, the organization's headquarters move also is expected to trim operating costs significantly.
In recent years, non-profits such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, CARE Inc.. Associated Catholic Charities and the American Center for Physics have relocated to the region from New York.
ASCE, the nation's largest engineering organization with 110,000 individual members, has been located in New York since its founding in 1852.
