Having spent the '80s playing everything from heavy rock to blues rock, folk rock, even jazz and Swedish pop, Roine Stolt of Sweden's Flower Kings got to the point where he felt confined by the inherent limitations of playing a regular three-minute song.
"I felt I needed to get back to what I really wanted to do with music," Stolt recalls. "I wanted to take all the influences of the music I listened to since I was a kid and put it into some form of music where I could express all of that. And to me, that's exactly what progressive rock is."
He broke into the genre and quickly established a fan base with a solo album called "The Flower King" in 1994.
