MARILYNN URICCHIO'S SEEN
The phenomenal success of his 1992 single, "Achy Breaky Heart," made Billy Ray Cyrus a household name and what seemed like an overnight country music star. Actually, he's been singing since he made his debut at 5 with his father's gospel group. His song "Some Gave All" was a Desert Storm anthem. Today, he stars in the PAX-TV series "Doc," playing a backwoods physician in the Big Apple. On April 27, "The Checkered Flag" episode will be a tribute to one of his heroes, the late NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt. Cyrus lives with his wife and six children just outside of Nashville, Tenn.
Q.: So how's your achy breaky heart these days?
A.: [laughing] Oh, well, it's beating right along.
Q.: You grew up in a very spiritual environment. Did you ever lose your faith?
A.: I'd have to say I never completely lost my faith, but daggone it's been tested enough. When a person loses faith, I mean what have you got? That's like losing hope. I believe God has a plan for everything and that there are no accidents in this world and everything...
