If you can't wait until next week for the new ice rink to open in PPG Plaza, don't forget there's been an outdoor ice skating rink nearby for more than 40 years.
Since 1960, the woods of North Park has had one of the best entertainment deals around. For just $3.50 if you're an adult and $2 if you're a child, you can waltz around North Park's ice rink almost any time.
I decided to drive Downtown on Wednesday, then skate around North Park to see if the new rink, set to open Dec. 18, will pose much of a challenge. I noticed a few differences and developed this category- by-category comparison:
Surroundings
At North Park you can skate past a lake and enjoy hillsides covered with evergreen trees.
At PPG, you have the glass castles.
North Park has the edge.
I admit, skating among the castles will be cool. But I like the natural feeling at North Park. And if you go to PPG Plaza on a weekday, the main thing you see around the castles are smokers lighting up on their 15-minute break.
