The only thing steeper than the 70.9-degree grade on the Johnstown Inclined Plane is a projected $300,000 deficit that is threatening to shut down the 110-year-old attraction.
One of only four inclines still operating in the United States -- two are in Pittsburgh -- the Cambria County tourist attraction may close because of the bungled renovation of a bridge that leads to it, The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown reported in Sunday's editions.
The state Department of Transportation owns the bridge, which connects Route 56 to the incline's base station across the Stonycreek River.
But PennDOT plans to close the bridge -- the only means to access the incline's base -- from June 18 to Aug. 31 because steel beams ordered for a reconstruction project are the wrong size.
