Technically, the players celebrated. A jump here, a hop there. A brief group hug, a few highfives and some smiles.
But the revelry was not quite proportional to what the Washington University women's basketball team accomplished last night with its 61-38 victory over Carnegie Mellon at Skibo Gymnasium.
The Bears won their 61st consecutive game, more than any other NCAA women's basketball team at any level, breaking the record Capital University, another Division III school, set in 199495. Washington University hasn't lost in more than two years, and it has a chance to join the 1971-72 and 1972-73 UCLA men as the only collegiate basketball teams to post consecutive undefeated seasons.
Not that anyone could tell from their postgame demeanor.
"They're happy a lot," Washington University Coach Nancy Fahey said. "It's not like they have to have a huge celebration. They know they're proud of themselves. There's a lot going on every day."
