Jacobs II was one of several "solar hemicycle" homes Frank Lloyd Wright designed late in his career; the closest one to Madison is in Rockford, Ill.
"They were considered something of an oddity and were never embraced by the mainstream," said Ed Linville, whose Madison architectural firm, Linville Architects, designed the award-winning carport and garage for Betty and John Moore, the current owners of Jacobs II. "They (solar hemicycles) had a bit of a zenith, but they were quirky and too exotic. They were experimental, and it seemed like Wright was tinkering a bit."
