THE ONLY HOUSE IN OREGON designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is now open to the public.
The Gordon House was commissioned by a Wilsonville couple, Conrad and Evelyn Gordon, in 1957. Wright came up with one of his modest, working-class "Usonian House" designs, this one at 2,133 square feet. The famed architect died four years before construction was completed in 1963.
Recent buyers of the property, who wanted to put up a new home on the site, donated the Wright design to the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy so that the house could be moved. The conservancy worked with the Oregon Garden Foundation and the city of Silverton to come up with a plan.
The house was moved in sections a year ago to a plot at the Oregon Garden. It was rebuilt and restored. Dedication ceremonies were held last weekend.
Visitors can soak in both the historic Gordon House and the world- class botanical displays at the Oregon Garden. The 65-acre garden is 40 miles southeast of Portland in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. The garden is open year-round, and admission is $7 for adults.
