Madison's only hip-hop club is closing to make way for an upscale jazz, blues and swing club that neighbors and city officials say will better fit the evolving character of King Street.
The 3 1/2 -year-old Mass Appeal at 114 King St., known for its bartime police presence, will close later this summer.
If the city's Alcohol License Review Committee, which meets today, agrees to transfer the club's license, Shannon and Katie Sweeney plan to open King Club there by September. The couple own The Living Room, a restaurant, bar and coffee house on University Ave., across from the UW Fluno Center.
"What I'm trying to do is be a little more exclusive. It's going to be something that really complements the area," said Shannon Sweeney.
