The athletes at Washington University are there to benefit from one of the finest educational experiences available in these United States. Going for 3's on the basketball court is one thing, but they shoot for more in the classroom. They go for fours.
The athletes happen to be actual students at Division III Washington U., which means they'll have a great chance at success in their chosen professions when their college days are over, and it won't have anything to do with drawing pay for play.
But a false presumption is that D-3 athletes don't care about their sports, don't care about winning, as much as Division I athletes do. The D-3s are just as vulnerable to the frustration and the emptiness that comes with a numbing dose of failure. They cry, and feel smaller, when they lose. Pain knows no classification. The sting of defeat doesn't give a pass to Division III.
