CONCERT REVIEW
The audience was disappointingly small at Powell Symphony Hall for Friday night's concert by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, but those who attended were rewarded with some fine music-making.
The concert offered two debuts, by conductor Michael Christie and violinist Karen Gomyo. Gomyo's proved particularly welcome: She's a terrific young talent, with energy and technical ability to spare, and she impressed mightily in Aram Khachaturian's Violin Concerto.
The Khachaturian was, in fact, the highlight of the performance. This is a wonderful piece of music, its marvelously melancholy central section framed by big, fast-paced movements. Gomyo dazzled during the fiery bits, but in the slow...
