While there is the possibility of Major League Soccer coming to St. Louis in 2008, three other soccer teams at lower levels of the sport will definitely be up and running in the area in the next few weeks.
All three are amateur teams:
- The St. Louis Lions, a men's team that will play in the Premier Development League of the United Soccer League.
- River Cities FC and FC St. Louis, teams that will play in the Women's Premier Soccer League.
"There's a buzz going on" about soccer locally, said Tony Glavin, the one-time St. Louis indoor player and coach who owns and coaches the Lions, whose season begins Saturday at 5 p.m. against Des Moines at Glavin's facility in Cottleville in St. Charles County. The Lions also are at home Sunday, playing Sioux Falls at 5 p.m.
"Soccer needs to be here," said Lindsay Kennedy, the one-time Steamer who is the director of operations for River Cities FC. "It's crazy. So many kids play here, but then it just fades away because no one has any opportunities once you get past college. Now they have a place to go. It's great."
