NBC Official Disdains Series
An NBC-TV executive said Friday he hopes one team will sweep the World Series so the network can return quickly to its entertainment programming. Don Ohlmeyer, the president of NBC's West Coast division and a former executive producer of NBC Sports, also said he would be happy if NBC could give the Series to another network.
This year's matchup, Cleveland vs. Florida, is expected to draw low ratings because neither team is in a major market, has marquee players or a large national following. If the Series goes more than four games, NBC's potent Thursday lineup that includes "Seinfeld" and "ER" would be pre-empted.
Asked if he would advise NBC to sell the rights to next year's postseason baseball to Fox or CBS, Ohlmeyer said, "I would love it if some body wanted it right now." He added, "If the A&E (cable) channel called, I'd take the call."
