Washington University won its first NCAA Division III women's basketball championship Saturday night, and there was no doubt the Bears had earned it.
Washington U. defeated host University of Southern Maine 77-69 in the finale in front of 1,950 fans, running the gauntlet this season to give coach Nancy Fahey her first national title in three trips to the NCAA Final Four.
The Bears finished the season with a school-record 28-2 mark, including:
* Two victories over defending NCAA champion New York University to win the University Athletic Association title.
* An NCAA first-round victory over Millikin, the nation's only unbeaten team.
* A victory over top-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh to advance to the semifinals.
