Alia Fischer, reared in Rochester, Minn., was a star basketball player for John Marshall High School but she had some apprehensions about play Division I basketball.
"I did not want to attend a Division I school, where they own you," Fischer said. "I love basketball, but I like other things and I wanted flexibility."
Fischer has found a home and success at the Division III level at Washington U.
The sophomore center, who will lead the Bears into the NCAA Division III women's Final Four tonight in Gorham, Maine, was named a first-team All-American bkon Thursday. She is the second Bear to receive first-team accolades, following WU Hall of Famer Karen Hermann in 1991.
