WOMEN'S NCAA TOURNAMENT
Wow.
"You can say that again," murmured Nancy Fahey.
OK, double wow.
In the 18 years of the NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament, her Washington University Bears are the second team to repeat as champion. And just the third team to win 30 games or go unbeaten.
With a career game from Tasha Rodgers, and the usual player-of- the-year show from Alia Fischer, the Bears fended off College of St. Benedict 74-65 on Saturday night at Western Connecticut University.
Top-ranked WU ended 30-0, with a two-season winning streak of 38 games. Not bad for a crew missing three starters from last year -- the school's career leaders in points and rebounds and third-best in assists.
"That was last year's team," said Fahey, who has taken four teams to the Final Four in her 13 years at WU. "We allowed this year's team to develop in it's own way.
"But I think it's pretty realistic to say, 'Let's try to do this again.' I can't imagine starting a season and not having that as a goal."
