The Washington University Bears are back in the Final Four. In other words, right where the Division III women's basketball world feared they would be:
Top-ranked, 28-0, surfing a 36-game winning streak and two victories from defending their national title.
Coach Nancy Fahey's club plays the University of Scranton (Ohio) tonight in Danbury, Conn. The winner plays Saturday against the survivor of the other semifinal between Salem (Mass.) State and the College of St. Benedict (Minn.).
The Bears barely made it out of the Great Lakes Sectional last weekend in Grand Rapids, Mich.
"It's amazing," Fahey said. "An OT game and a one-point game, or we wouldn't be here talking. I'd be home."
Her club blew a big early lead, then worked overtime to fend off Capital (Ohio) University 77-70. Then the Bears, down by 16 points in the first half, inched past fourth-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh 56-55.
