Washington U. senior wins preseason honor
Washington University senior center Alia Fischer has been selected as the women's DIII News Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.
Fischer became the first two-time Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division III Player of the Year last season after leading the Bears to their second consecutive national championship and the first undefeated season in team history. Fischer returns with three other starters for the Bears, who will start the season with a 38- game winning streak. They are ranked No. 1 in the DIII News preseason poll.
* Detroit Shock coach Nancy Lieberman-Cline will be back for a third season after the team exercised its option in the final year of her contract. She led the team to a playoff berth in its second WNBA season.
* The Los Angeles Sparks selected former Lakers forward Michael Cooper as their coach. He replaces Orlando Woolridge, who was fired earlier this month.
