The cast on Alia Fischer's right arm was rather conspicuous this summer, but her basketball teammates at Washington University didn't have to wait to see the plaster to find out about her broken right wrist.
"Word traveled fast," coach Nancy Fahey said. "It didn't take long, trust me. I think the whole team knew within 30 minutes."
Fischer, a two-time NCAA Division III Player of the Year, broke a bone in her wrist while playing a pickup game but is expected to be ready when practice begins Oct. 23. But she'll be carrying a small piece of hardware.
The Bears center underwent surgery and had a pin inserted to hold the bone together, a Washington University trainer said. She was in a cast for six weeks but since has had the arm placed in a splint. She has been cleared to begin using the arm.
