In keeping with its two-year pillaging of NCAA Division III, Washington University dismantled yet another opponent Saturday, closing out a second consecutive undefeated regular season and boosting its record victory streak to 63.
In front of a school-record crowd of 2,389 at the Washington U. Field House, the women's basketball squad (25-0 overall, 15-0 in the University Athletic Association) blistered the University of Chicago 70-33. The contest allotted the Bears another "W" for their NCAA women's record, which the team set Feb. 18 against Carnegie Mellon.
While the victory pushed the Bears one game closer to the record for most consecutive wins in all of NCAA basketball - the UCLA men tabbed an 88-game streak from 1971-74 - and set the stage for the NCAA Tournament, Saturday night's win had another, deeper meaning.
