The future of TWA's landmark terminal at Kennedy Airport in New York is in more of a fog than ever because of American Airlines' decision to speed up consolidation and to eliminate all TWA Airlines LLC flights there.
Julia Bishop-Cross, a spokeswoman for American and TWA, said Tuesday that the TWA terminal at Kennedy would close in mid-October. Beyond that, nothing has been determined, she said.
Even before the American Airlines announcement and before the recent airborne terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, controversy swooped around the building, constructed in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The New York Port Authority, which manages the city's airports, wants to build a new terminal for United Airlines around the TWA terminal to handle increased traffic. No construction dates have been set.
But some architects and preservation groups argue that the plan would destroy the significant parts of the TWA building, namely its gate structures.
