Abstract

PHOTO(S) / GRAPH(S); 1. [Mayo A. Shattuck III], former Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown executive, took the reins of Constellation Energy Group in November 2001. One of his critical moves was to create the position of chief risk officer and appoint [John Collins] to the job. 2. Mayo Shattuck, outside his office on East Pratt Street, says he was surprised at how far Constellation had strayed from its core business when he became CEO more than a year ago. He reduced the work force, trimmed costs and sold off extraneous businesses. 3. BGE President [Frank O. Heintz] was the only high-level executive retained by Shattuck, who changed a top-down management culture to one with a team of leaders who would make decisions. 4. [E. Follin Smith], chief financial officer, focused on the company's balance sheet. Carefully timing her moves in the capital market, she began refinancing $2.5 billion of debt due this year, spreading it over 30 years, and started keeping $500 million cash in the bank for "ready liquidity." 5.
