The two companies that operate Northwest Airlink from Bangor International Airport have filed for bankruptcy although they will continue to fly at least until the end of November.
New Hampshire-based Northeast Express Regional Airlines Inc. and Precision Airlines, both headed by Newburgh businessman Allyn Caruso, filed Saturday to reorganize under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
The filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Portland came days after Northwest Airlines told the two operators that it wasn't renewing its contract when it expired at the end of November. A spokesman for the Minneapolis-based Northwest Airlines saw that after November, its airlink flights will be handled by Business Express, which operates a connection carrier for Delta Airlines.
"It was strictly a business decision," said John Austin, director of media relations for Northwest Airlines. Austin said the company hopes to offer the same services now in place, but at a reduced cost to the Minneapolis airline company.
