SOUTH BEND -- A gang banger named Roman wore his attitude on his face. Rev. Greg Boyle, the priest who ran the bakery in East Los Angeles, told him to quit whining.
Roman had to show off the place to yet another busload of tourists. Groups often came to see how Boyle got an entire staff of Latino gang "enemies" to work side by side.
As the bus drove up, Roman pretended he was their guide on the bus: "These are untamed gang members. Keep your hands inside the bus. Don't look them in the eye or they'll think you're mad-dogging them."
As Boyle told Roman's story, his voice eventually filled with sorrow. Boyle came to the University of Notre Dame on Tuesday to speak about a place where he'd just buried his 89th young gang member Saturday.
