CORRECTION (June 3, 2006): Because of a reporting error, a story on A1 of Friday's paper incorrectly identified the location where Gates Automotive Group is looking to move its Chevrolet operation. It is actually considering a location somewhere near the intersection of U.S. 31 and the St. Joseph Valley Parkway, more commonly known as the U.S. 20 Bypass.
The Tribune regrets the error.
Gates Automotive Group, which has operated in downtown South Bend since 1939, will move its Toyota dealership from Western Avenue to the south side of the city early next summer.
The remainder of the dealership's downtown operation -- including the Chevrolet business -- could leave soon after, possibly vacating up to 12 acres of property, the company said Thursday.
The Toyota dealership will relocate to an 8.5-acre property on West Ireland Road, anxious to join the new retail development along that corridor.
