Artist Lydia O'Leary's experience with paint convinced her she could do something about the port wine birthmark covering most of her face since birth. She realized that a skin disfigurement could be covered up in the same way an artist repairs painting errors with lighter paint.
With help from a chemist, O'Leary developed a covering cream that concealed her birthmark for an entire weekend. The time was the 1930s when cosmetics were declared ineligible for patents by the U.S. government, but O'Leary was granted a patent for the product after a convincing demonstration.
