Ed Prohofsky, athletic director of the Minneapolis Public Schools, and Gary Sudduth, president of the Minneapolis Urban League, have asked the Miss Basketball committee to consider naming two winners this year.
On Sunday, the committee gave Stewartville's Kasey Morlock the award. A letter addressed to committee chair Donna Mark and signed by Prohofsky and Sudduth, asks the committee to name Tracy Henderson of Minneapolis Henry as co-winner. Henderson, named to most high school All-America teams, was one of the five finalists but, according to several committee members, her chances were hurt by a bad on-court attitude.
Here are a few excerpts from the letter:
"Attitude is considered by all selection committees for recognizing athletic excellence and if a student is a `bad actor,' she/he is not considered for the award. It is assumed that Tracy's attitude, as considered by this committee, was acceptable and she was selected as a finalist. When an elimination process selects five finalists, the winner of the selected five should have been the best basketball player.
". . . The process appeared not to be fair in this year's selection of Miss Basketball of Minnesota."
