Starting guard Joy Otten of Christ's Household of Faith had a special reason for being happy Saturday after the Lions beat Climax/Fisher 53-34 for third place in the Class A Girls' State Basketball Tournament.
"This was a good thing for my mother, a real day-brightener," Otten said. "She needs things like this to keep up her spirits in life."
Linda Otten, Joy's mother, watched the game at home on television. She had breast cancer, which has turned into bone cancer.
"She doesn't have a good prognosis; she's really weak," Joy Otten said. "So I was glad we won our first game and she got to see all the games on TV.
"The other day (Friday), the whole team visited her in the hospital when she was in for chemotherapy, and we sang her the school fight song."
