Hollywood residents awoke early Friday to the sound of sirens from 26 fire companies headed to a blaze that destroyed a building just blocks from the famous tourist district.
It took 140 firefighters nearly two hours to contain the blaze, which began about 5:30 a.m. and sent flames shooting through the roof of the single-story, 1920s-era building in the 1100 block of Highland Avenue. The column of smoke rising from the building was visible for miles.
