David Hadley O'Grady, Wayne's superintendent of schools for 20 years, died Monday of cancer. He was 67.
Mr. O'Grady became superintendent in 1968 after being assistant superintendent for six years. He was responsible for the consolidation of the existing township schools.
He oversaw the construction of Wayne Hills High School, George Washington Junior High School, Albert Payson Terhune Elementary School, John F. Kennedy Elementary School, and the board office on Nellis Drive. He also oversaw building of additions to six schools and the closing of four.
"He was a real inspirational leader," said Dr. Ray V. Kwak, current superintendent of the Wayne school system. "He took us through a period of rapid growth and had a lot to do with what the district is today."
