A college professor provided the decisive argument in Kasey Morlock's decision to join the North Dakota State University volleyball team this fall. Morlock completed her basketball eligibility last season after scoring a North Central Conference women's record 2,233 career points.
Knowing she needed this year to complete her degree in electrical engineering, Morlock last year considered being a fifth-year volleyball player. For practical reasons, it probably made more sense for Morlock to concentrate on her studies.
That's the way she was leaning. Until one of her professors intervened.
"He said he thought I should go out {for the volleyball team}," said Morlock, a former all-around star athlete at Stewartville, Minn., High School. "He said it's easy to be the star, but sometimes it's not so easy to be on the bench. He just thought it would be a good experience for me."
A month into the season, Morlock said the experience has been all she hoped for.
It's been so good, in fact, that Morlock may be spending less time on the bench than she first anticipated.
