In the past year, KSTC has managed to wrestle broadcast rights to state high school tournaments and the Timberwolves from Fox-owned KMSP and WFTC, respectively.
On Thursday, the Fox folks threw a counterpunch when they reached a five-year deal with corporate cousin FSN North for WFTC (Ch. 29) to become the over-the-air home for the Twins beginning next season. KSTC (Ch. 45) had carried the Twins the past two seasons and executives at the Hubbard-owned station weren't particularly thrilled with how the process played out.
Under the agreement, WFTC will air 28 games in 2005, including two spring training contests and the home opener April 8 against Chicago. The other 25 telecasts will be on Saturdays and Sundays; FSN North will continue to simulcast those games outside the Twin Cities market for those who don't get Ch. 29.
"It feels great to have the Twins," said Carol Rueppel, general manager of KMSP and WFTC. "It's a very positive opportunity for us and one that meant a lot. We worked hard for it."
