Surprised shipwatchers observed anxiously Sunday as a 1,000-foot lake freighter approaching the Aerial Lift Bridge suddenly made a sharp U-turn abnormally close to the bridge and the downtown Duluth waterfront.
A duty officer with the U.S. Coast Guard said the Paul R. Barker appeared to have turned to make way for the Mesabi Miner, which was approaching the lift bridge from the harbor side.
