BIG LEAGUERS RETURN FOR PARSIPPANY FALL FEST
Former major league baseball players Paul Mirabella and Joe Orsulak will make special guest appearances at the third annual Parsippany Fall Fest on Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. in Lake Hiawatha on North Beverwyck Road. The street will be closed off from Iroquois Avenue to the Grand Union shopping plaza during the event.
Mirabella played for Parsippany High School and went on to pitch for the New York Yankees as well as several other teams. Orsulak starred for Parsippany Hills High School before becoming an outfielder for the New York Mets and other teams.
Phil Pepe, the sports broadcaster, and Dale and Yogi Berra will make appearances as well.
In total, there will be more than 100 celebrity and entertainment participants.
The festival, sponsored by Parsippany Township and the Greater Parsippany Kiwanis Club, will feature food vendors of several varieties, and rides and games for children. The Rotary Club will sponsor the ever-popular dunk tank, but there is no official word yet on who might get dunked.
Raffle tickets are on sale now. The drawing will be held the day of the festival. Winners may receive a large, elegant doll house or a Yankees or Mets jacket.
The winner need not be present at the drawing. Tickets cost $1 each.
Buy them ahead at the Parsippany municipal building or at any branch of the Parsippany library. Or buy them along the street during the festival.
The drawing will take place at approximately 4 p.m. on the day of the festival.
Local restaurants will be open for the event.
Fall Fest visitors also will be able to enjoy Johnny Maestro and The Brooklyn Bridge, a popular group in the 50s and 60s. Additional entertainment also will be available.
There also will be food venders, antique fire equipment, antique trolleys, square dancing and crafters.
Shuttle buses will be available to take people to the festival.
Community organizations and non-profit organizations such as the Elks, Rotary, churches and synagogues will have tables featuring informational handouts.
The Bloodmobile will be set up all day for blood donors. Last year, the Fall Fest had a very successful blood drive. This year should be even better, given the current circumstances in New York City.
Major corporate sponsors include Mack Cali, Chubb, the Daily Record, Cablevision, Chase Manhattan Bank, New York Life Investment Management and Pfizer.
Funds raised this year will go to the Public Library for upgrading of facilities and equipment. Last year, more than $6,000 was donated to the Parsippany Child Care Center. The first Fall Fest yielded over $3,500, which was donated to the Parsippany Rescue and Recovery Squads and the Ambulance Squad.
