Text of unattributed report: "SRE confirms Mexican withdrawal from Inter-American Reciprocal Assistance Treaty", carried by Mexican news agency Notimex
Mexico City, 6 September: The Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Relations (SRE) has confirmed today that Mexico is withdrawing from the Inter-American Reciprocal Assistance Treaty (TIAR) because of its belief that the vulnerability of nations does not lie solely in military or ideological threats.
The SRE said that "today, the government of Mexico deposited its instrument of denunciation for the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance with the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS)" in order to carry out that decision.
The SRE explained in a press release that this decision is being taken a year after President Vicente Fox Quesada announced at the OAS the beginning of consultations on a possible withdrawal from the TIAR. During his speech on 7 September 2001 to the...
