-- Sixteen High-School Students to Compete at University of Waterloo --
MARKHAM, ON, May 3 /CNW/ -A major sponsorship announced by Sun Microsystems of Canada Inc. today will help support a national initiative to promote computer science education in Canada's secondary schools. Sun's three- year commitment, worth more than $150,000, will provide financial assistance to the Canadian Computing Competition (CCC), managed by The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) at the University of Waterloo.
"This generous contribution from Sun Microsystems will help us greatly in our work to promote and enhance the learning of computer science in Canadian schools, " said Prof. Steve Brown, Director of the CEMC.
According to Brad Keates, Director of Marketing at Sun Microsystems of Canada Inc., today's announcement reflects Sun's ongoing relationship with the education and research community in Canada and around the world.
"The first Sun(TM) workstation was created from an academic environment," said Keates. "As such, Sun is committed to giving back to the academic community that has contributed to its success. Sun's investment in the CCC demonstrates this commitment."
The Canadian Computing Competition, established in 1995, is held in two stages. In the first stage of the competition, junior and senior computing contests are produced and distributed to schools across the country in February.
From May 3-5, 16 students will visit the University of Waterloo to participate in stage two of the competition. During this time, students participating in competitions will be observed for their creativity and quality of...
