Abstract

Originally, mobile libraries in the UK were viewed as a way of offering a library service to those who would not otherwise receive one. Presently, many mobiles offer all the facilities of a modern branch library. Persons living in urban areas have different problems from those living in rural communities. Therefore, the mobile library service offered to urban dwellers will not be the same as that offered to those in rural areas. The Gateshead community bus has been found to be an effective tool in reaching out to geographically and economically isolated groups of individuals living in Wales, including: 1. people who have difficulty traveling, 2. people with young children, and 3. people on low incomes. In today's economic climate, it is especially important for the library manager to use resources wisely and economically while still providing an effective service. A major consideration of staffing mobile libraries is the quality of service. Client needs should always be paramount in setting up a book selection policy. Mobile libraries must stay up with the times by using any new technology available.
