Abstract

This 11-chapter book is intended to explore the ways in which professional and vocational education and training (VET) can contribute toward building the emerging "knowledge society," particularly the ways in which the research and development community can take proactive steps to shape the emerging knowledge society. Part 1, on promoting knowledge development, contains these chapters: "Introduction" (Barry Nyhan) and "Knowledge Development, Research, and Collaborative Learning" (Barry Nyhan). Part 2, which attempts to illustrate knowledge development actions, contains "Supporting European Research Cooperation" (Pekka Kamarainen); "Knowledge Development and Deliberative Reasoning" (Sten Pettersson); "Building Arenas for Collaborative Development in a Swedish Context" (Bernd Hofmeier); and "Making Sense of Mobility Projects as Vehicles for Learning" (Soren Kristensen). Part 3, on information and communication technologies and knowledge development, includes these chapters:"Creating Spaces for Knowledge Development" (Alan Brown, Graham Attwell) and "Web-based Support for Collaborative Research" (Sabine Manning). Part 4 covers theories, frameworks, and conceptual issues with "Theories of Knowledge Development within Organizations" (Massimo Tomassini); "Capturing the Knowledge Embedded in Practice through Action Research" (Barry Nyhan); "The Limitation of Computers in the Management of Knowledge" (Tyggvi Thayer).
