Abstract

This monograph presents descriptions of 11 residential and day treatment programs serving seriously emotionally disturbed youth. Each program's description includes information about the program's origins, type of children served, guiding philosophy and treatment approach, services offered, work with families, linkages with other child-serving agencies, staffing, funding, and evaluation of program effectiveness. The 11 descriptions are organized by type of program, beginning with day treatment programs, followed by residential programs, and concluding with those programs that offer both residential and day treatment services. The programs include: Advances of Wiley House (Mohrsville, Pennsylvania); City Lights (Washington, D.C.); Poyama Land (Independence, Oregon); Alpha Omega (Littleton, Massachusetts); Children's Village (Dobbs Ferry, New York); Lad Lake, Inc., (Dousman, Wisconsin); Whitaker School (Butner, North Carolina); Youth Residential Services (Akron, Ohio); Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (Rockville, Maryland); The Spurwink School (Portland, Maine); and Tri-County Youth Programs, Inc. (Northampton, Massachusetts). Preceding the in-depth program descriptions is a section highlighting the overall findings, which discusses the characteristics of children served, program characteristics, treatment approaches, staffing patterns, and problems experienced. Appendixes list the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of the 11 program administrators, and offer brief descriptions of approximately 100 programs that responded to the program survey but were not selected for site visits.
