Abstract

This phrasebook is intended to help Americans coming into contact with Vietnamese overcome the communication barrier. It is not intended as a pedagogical aid for those wishing to learn Vietnamese. The vocabulary items used in the sentences cover only the most common and basic situations. An additional 1500-word English-Vietnamese glossary is provided at the back of the book. Topics dealt with are those deemed to be of the greatest immediate utility. Sentences are short and simple, and a respelling based on English orthography has been given for each Vietnamese word or sentence. An introduction to the Vietnamese language is followed by instructions for using the phrasebook. Chapter one contains words and phrases useful to sponsors, and these are grouped under the headings of: (1) introduction to the American home; (2) social etiquette; (3) common everyday activities; and (4) shopping. Chapter 2 contains vocabulary useful to employers and supervisors, chapter 3 to agency officials, and chapter 4 to teachers. (AM)
