This article examines the fundamental characteristics of the press in Mexico from its origins in the sixteenth century, and until the proclamation of the first liberal constitution in 1857. It also addresses the major changes that allowed newspapers to influence into the emerging Mexican public opinion. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
